Waxing Waxing Waxing!!

Right, theres been alot of talk about waxing now that summer is here, and seeing as i do a heck of a lot of waxing in the salon i thought i would post a tutorial for everyone to get some ideas.

Now this is the way that I work in the salon, NOT neccesarily the way I was taught at college.

Things you will need:
  • Wax (and heater) DUH!
  • Spatulas
  • Strips, i prefer paper as they are more rigid than fabric and you have better control over them.
  • Tissues
  • Baby wipes For bikini and maybe underarm waxing
  • Disposable thongs for bikini waxing
  • Spray bottle with surgical spirit (to cleanse the area, i only use pre wax cleanser on the face)
  • tweezers, small scissors, orange wood sticks (for eyebrows), cut smaller strips for eyebrows also.
  • Pre wax cleanser, i use salon systems sensitive pre wax cleanser in a pump dispenser for ease of use.
  • After wax oil, will remove any stickyness when you are finished, it will also remove clumps of wax! I use Salon Systems Just wax after wax oil.
  • Aloe Vera Gel, to cool and soothe skin after waxing. again, i use salon systems Just wax aloe vera gel.
Starting from the very beginning here!!!

Greet your client, take them through to your room, ask them to remove the appropriate clothing and give them a modesty towel. Leave them for a few minutes and knock before you re-enter the room! might sound obvious but some people may get confused!! Make sure you tell your client EXACTLY what they need to do, because they may not know what you want them to do and its embarrasing for them!

Before you start any waxing wash your hands in front of the client if possible. If not spray them with Surgical Spirit so the client knows your hygeinic!! Use a new spatula for each client, and when you are finished throw it in the bin whilst they are in the room. You may wish to wear gloves, personally, i cannot stand them. I have them ready in case i need them though, ie if the client bleeds alot or you dont feel you want to touch them directly. Check the temperature of the wax on the back of your wrist.

Cleanse the area to be waxed with surgical spirit on a tissue (if a facial area use pre wax lotion on cotton wool).

ALL YOU NEED TO REMEMBER IS APPLY THE WAX IN THE DIRECTION OF THE HAIR GROWTH AND REMOVE IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION PARALLEL TO THE SKIN.

As long as you remember this you can wax any area!!! I could go on forever telling you how to wax each area of the body, but no body would read it anyway!! this is long enough already! lol.

Half / full Leg

  • Apply the wax to the entire front of the leg up to the knee going in the direction of the hair growth.
  • Starting at the top of the leg press down your strip leaving about an inch at the bottom for you to grip.
  • Smooth the strip onto the leg using firm pressure.
  • Quickly and fluidly pull the strip off parallel with the leg in the opposite direction of the hair growth.
  • Repeat, working your way down the leg. Starting at the top and working down the leg avoids getting wax strings thus making it less messy!!!
  • you may want to do the front of the leg in 2 sections, ie. inner and outer. try and wax as much as possible from the front as it makes it easier to do the back!!
You really dont need to take too much time pressing the strip down, as you become more confident you will literally slap the strip onto the leg, give it a quick rub and whip it off!!
  • Now you have done the front below the knee you need to do the knees. these can be awkward due to the irregular shape. I cover the knee in wax, and remove the strips as above. Look carefully at the direction of the hair growth to ensure you are applying the wax in the right direction.
  • Turn the client over (make sure the back of your bed is flat!!! lol).
  • You should only have a strip at the back now, so use the same technique as the front of the leg. The hairs usually grow in a different direction on the back of the legs, they grow kind of to the side, so apply the wax in the direction of the hair growth, and pull off against.
A Half Leg wax takes me 15-20 minutes.

For a full leg wax just continue using the same technique on the thighs and upper half of the leg. Again, be really careful to check which way the hair is growing, because if you have a look at your thighs now, you will see that it generally grows downwards at the front, then if you look to the outer side it grows almost sideways, towards your bum. hope this makes sense!! lol.

The dreaded hollywood!!

Same tecnique applies no matter how much hair you remove. This bit is pretty much the same as the previous thead i posted!!

leave your client some baby wipes and a disposable thong. they need to clean themselves up and wear the thong instead of their own underwear. Make sure your couch (and client!!) is completely flat. this means they are more stretched out and its easier for you. DONT let them sit up, it will make your job near on impossible!

Start off by waxing the bits at the side of the thong and onto the thigh if needed. (this is a modest)

obviously ask the client how much she wants removed. If the client is having a strip left i always take off the bulk of hair from the top, but to perfect the strip i get them to lie flat with both their legs down so that u get it straight!! if they have one leg up when you do this it can make it wonky. i usually leave this bit till very last. Its a good idea to use the thong as a template.

if they are having it all off you do not need to worry about using the thong as a template obviously, so just get straight tin there and get it all off. I can usually do the whole of the top in about 3 or 4 sections. you dont want to do it in teeny sections as it takes too long so try and do as much as you feel comfortable doing at a time. ask them to pull the thong to one side while you remove the bit in the middle (you will actually find that the disposable thongs work like an extra pair of hands!!)

You may want your client to move one of her legs upwards so that you can get to bits you cant quite reach (imagine cross legged position, you dont want her legs flying about in the air at any time its embarrasing!!)

so once you have removed the hair at the top you need to move down to the underneath and the more intimate area.
Ask your client to bring her leg up (the one nearest to you) into the cross legged position (imagine shes doing yoga!! lol)
Now this is where the thongs are really helpful. you need to position it so it sits inside the labia, I think thats the PC term lol and get your client to actually pull the thong upwards. not too tight, you dont want them cutting off any circulation!! just so that it stretches the skin a little bit.

Now for this bit you do need to touch the clients (sometimes in awkward places, i just say 'dont mind me pokin around' and they usually laugh!) to hold the skin tight etc. which makes it hard to wear gloves.

So back to the waxing. so you have the thong positioned and your client is pulling it upwards a little and her one leg is positioned. start applying the wax in smallish sections (untill you gain confidence, i do this bit all in one now lol) make sure you stick with the normal rules of applying with the hair growth removing against. now you really do need to be brutal when you do this because if you dont take the strip clean off you can leave bruises (my old manageress told me to actually punch the couch when removing the strip in a downwards direction as it means you are pulling off the strip correctly). its hard for me to explain this bit here but im sure you will work to your own methods. just remember the hair grows really randomly if the client has been shaving.

now while your waxing i always ask the client to use her right hand to just pull out her right bum cheek,(while still holding the thong) revealing a bit of hair. wax that off.

now do the same on the other side. dont forget left hand holding left bum cheek.

NOW heres the bit most people hate. personally, it doesnt bother me. I get my client to lie on her side with her bum facing me! (lovely i know!) now, the leg that is on the bottom needs to be straight and the top leg needs to be leaning forwards (think recovery position.) now, using the hand thats on top your client needs to hold the thong and her bum cheek right up. now if your client is shy this can be difficult. they need to hold it RIGHT up. then you can wax those annoying bits of 'bum fluff' (quite literrally bum fluff!! lol) and your done.

Leave your client to check it and tell her to call you back if there is a problem. but if everything is ok leave her some after wax oil to remove stickiness and some after wax aloe vera gel to cool her down.

Chest, stomach and back (men)

wooo most of us (girlies) will take great pleasure in this.

For first time clients the hair will probably be longer. Myself, i dont worry about this, because generally the area is pretty flat, so the hairs shouldnt really matte up, or anything like that. you may prefer to clipper the area, thats up to you, just dont trim it too short!! about a CM is a good length.

each person is different when it comes to these areas. I usually apply wax with the hair growth to one side of the stomach/back, and remove all of that. Then the other side, then theres probably some little random bits that grow the opposite way, so i go over those.

AFTER EVERY WAXING TREATMENT ASK YOUR CLIENT TO CHECK THAT IT IS OK, APPLY OIL TO THE AREA AND THEN IF THEY WANT THEY CAN APPLY AFTER WAX CREAM OR ALOE VERA.

IF ANYONE HAS ANY SPECIFIC QUESTIONS I WILL DO MY BEST TO HELP!

Just one small tip I got from someone who just completed her NVQ3 in beauty therapy and also works in a salon.... was to rock the skin when the strip is in place, makes it adhere better to the hairs!

The Beauty Therapist who told me about 'rocking the skin' said that when you put the strip over the wax instead of pressing down just do a rolling like motion so you are kind of getting the strip in a better position and more hairs will be picked up?! Hard to explain this! Guess its almost the same as pressing firmly with the strip, so I'll stick to that!!!!

Below are my definitions and what i charge (and in brackets what i charged in city centre). You should definately charge more because a. its kinda like danger money and b. it takes longer!

Modest - Just the sides - £9 (£10)
Brazilian - A strip on the top and underneath - £12 (£15)
Honeymoon - Just a strip on top, all hair from underneath and round the back removed - £14 (£17)
Hollywood - Everything removed - £17 (£20)

Thats great Kate, I've only been doing waxing a few months and still finding it a bit hard especially the bikini and underarm areas and when the clients skin is older and less elastic. I cant always hold all the skin firmly which I think is why I get brusing. Any tips?

Also I've had clients come to me almost wax virgins with a lot of bikini hair which is really stubborn and they often want it taken quite far back. Would you use a hot wax for this? Its really tough to remove and I find it quite stressful myself (and I'm not the one having my hair pulled out!!). I've tried trimming first but it doesnt seem to help in most cases.

One last thing.....sometimes I get clients who have a mixture of short and longer hair say on a 1/2 leg or eyebrow. Maybe they shaved/ plucked some bits and the rest is longer. The shorter hair doesnt wax off. What do you say to them when they leave with visible hair left which if you sat and plucked them all out would take you until midnight?

Hope you dont mind.

If you cant support the skin always ask your client to hold it, and if they get in your way just manouver them so they dont. You will often find me tying myself in knots using only one hand whilst im keepin hold of skin with the other - imagine applying ur wax, then grabbing your strip with the same hand, lol.

You just have to be brutal!! At first i was terrified of 'wax virgins' because i really didnt like the fact i was hurting them so much. But now i just slap on mi wax and whip it off in a flash. I do sometimes have trouble with some clients, the wax doesnt come off sometimes. in which case i just put more wax on, press really firmly and pull the strip off very quickly.

I always just explain to clients before i wax them that there are underlying hairs waiting to come through that are too short for the wax to catch. you can tell before you wax them if this is going to be the case. i had a girl in the other day like this, so i advised her to pop back in a couple of weeks when there was better re-growth. she liked the fact i wasnt gonna rip her off!! lol. with eyebrows i tweeze the little'uns out, get a pair of good sharp pointy tweezers!!

Hope you dont mind.
